6:00 am
take it slow and thanks fo >> are watching kcci eight news. eric: right now on kcci, it's pretty much done. the snow is moving out, but moving the piles it left behind may take awhile. elizabeth: we are live with the latest road conditions. our drive cam giving you an early look at what you'll experience on your way to work. eric: and they made it. after a day of delays and missed planes, andy garman and scott reister are bringing us the first reports from the rose bowl in pasadena, california. welcome back everyone, it's tuesday december 29th. i'm eric hanson.
6:01 am
as we said the snow is moving out and we're adding it all up. metinka: we had a record snowfall in des moines and waterloo. they had over 10 inches of snow. down through august and ames. at the airport, 5.4 inches of snow with lighter totals around iowa. flurries around farther northwest iowa lifting to the northeast and moving out of the area. drive time is slower, like yesterday. roads will improve as the day goes along, watch for slick spots. temperature at 24 and that's where it will stay all day. bundle up as you head out. elizabeth: alyx sacks is watching the roads. what are you seeing? alyx: we are on 35 north, close to ankeny. i can tell you it is much
6:02 am
roads are pretty clear, when you are a major interstates but more troublesome spots seem to be side streets and on and off ramps have been really slippery. black ice underneath the ice, a lot of crews out there still plowing and trying to keep the roads clear. it's working as far as interstates are concerned. the side streets within more highly travel areas might be ok but if you are going on less traveled roads, be more cautious because they are not as clear. 65 was not as clear, that was maybe down to one lane. south on 35, south of des moines, that is covered, they are saying that is covered on both sides of the highway and there is blowing snow. this time yesterday, we could hardly see in front of us because of the snow.
6:03 am
freeway, we start to see more black ice and that's what you really want to slow down for. anytime there is inclement weather, anytime the roads are wet, give yourself extra time whether it's getting out the door or between you and the car in front of you. keep an eye on the roadway and back to you. elizabeth: thank you. the latest look at 511ia.org shows roads across the state are still a mess after monday's storm. pink here means roads are completely covered. blue means partially covered. so if you're heading out anywhere around iowa today, you'll want to take it easy and give yourself more time. eric: monday night, travel was not advised east of the metro to grinnell. several vehicles were scattered in the ditch along i-80 eastbound, like this fed ex truck near mitchellville. many drivers were taking it slow, only going about 30 miles per hour on the interstate. and several truck drivers decided not to risk it and just parked for the night. jacob benson: i parked here just for my personal safety.
6:04 am
park, so i figured i would stop for the night. things were going too slow and i just didn't want to cause an accident or be in an accident. eric: probably a wise choice. state patrol says they had 236 calls for service monday. fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. the storm also caused headaches for drivers and public works employees in west des moines. the city dispatched about 20 of its trucks before the storm hit, and employees covered more than 700 miles of streets until the storm passed. elizabeth: at the airport today, a dozen flights either canceled or delayed already this morning. including flights to denver, charlotte, and both chicago midway and o'hare. if you're flying today, you'll want to check on your flight status as the day goes on. of course this all a result of the weather and all the cancellations yesterday. flight aware reports there were 32 cancellations and 19 delays of flights coming into or going out of the des moines airport.
6:05 am
2,800 flights were cancelled and about 4,800 were delayed. some iowa hawkeye fans were stranded at the airport, trying to get to pasadena for the rose bowl. three charter flights today and three more tomorrow are scheduled to take more hawk fans to california. we're now just three days away from the big game, so hopefully all the fans who need to get to pasadena will get there before friday. eric: kcci is sending several of our own down to cover the rose bowl for the week. and after a long day of delays and a couple cancellations, andy garman, scott reister, and steve karlin made it to pasadena last night. andy and scott join us now with what to expect in the coming days. >> good morning from downtown los angeles. it was snowy in des moines yesterday when we got off the plane last night but here in california, palm trees and temperatures around 60. >> it is the first time since

jury decided not to indict two officers in the shooting death of 12-year-old tamir rice last year. officer timothy loehmann is accused of shooting the 12-year-old less than two seconds after arriving at a park where rice was playing with a toy gun. prosecutors say loehmann was justified in the shooting, because he believed rice was a threat at the time. elizabeth: you can bet the big sledding hills will be busy. metinka: you bet, it will be chilly but not overly cold. snow has stopped accumulating in central iowa but the roads will be slippery. at 24 right now in des moines and temperatures will change much, heading for 26. grab warm coats and mittens. there is a bit of light snow between here and minneapolis. into south dakota we have snow showers that will be heading
